About Joshka Wessels

As well as producing films, I am currently writing up my PhD dissertation in Human Geography for the Amsterdam Institute for Global Issues and Development Studies (AGIDS).

I am specialising on Sustainable Traditional Groundwater Systems in Syria (Middle East). These are antique tunnels of more than 1500 years old. The tunnels are called ÒQanat RomaniÓ in Syria. In some sites the local people still use the water from these tunnels for drinking water, irrigation and domestic use. We surveyed these active qanats in Syria and throughout our fieldwork used digital video to record observations in the field and interview traditional water users.

Most importantly the research work triggered at least three renovations of the tunnels at different sites.
